Sympatex to launch climate-neutral membrane

German textiles innovator Sympatex Technologies has announced it will introduce its “guaranteed green” membrane at ISPO Munich, an international sports-business expo, in February 2017.

Sympatex’s new membrane is produced in a completely climate-neutral way for the first time, according to a company press release. In order to eliminate any contribution to climate change, the company will compensate the CO₂ amount of its entire yearly membrane production starting from 2017 through respective climate-protection certificates in cooperation with the Munich-based IT consultancy ClimatePartner.

The basis of the membrane is the Sympatex copolymer, a compound of polyester and polyether molecules, the release notes. The company and its partner DSM have reduced the carbon footprint of the product by 50 percent during the production of a Sympatex copolymer in comparison with a PTFE polymer.
