Spinnova develops non-chemical wood-based yarn

EcoNote | April 24, 2015 | By:

Spruce fibers2Spinnova Ltd., a Jyvaskyla, Finland-based spinoff of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd., is developing fiber-to-yarn technology that is totally different from traditional textile yarn production.

Spinnova’s technology uses no chemicals to dissolve wood fiber to a polymer level to regenerate cellulosic filaments. Instead, the technology allows the production of novel, low-cost, environmentally friendly textile yarns made directly from wood fibers through a wet spinning process.

Spinnova’s process refines such long-fiber woods as pine and spruce, and is the only technology that can be used to manufacture yarn directly from wood fibers without chemical processing.
