Greensboro, N.C., yarn maker Unifi Inc. reports that its first-quarter net income was at $8.9 million, up from $2.3 million during the same period a year ago, which can be attributed, according to the company, to gains from improved margins, lower interest expenses and higher earnings from the company’s unconsolidated equity affiliates, offset in part by higher expenses for income taxes. Unifi’s net sales were down 2.4 percent from $172.9 million to $168.7 million, reflecting declines in the company’s international sales.
